Beach Treasure Hunt

Sometimes the things we find at the beach are easy to identify, like this paua shell.

This hermit crab needed a closer inspection to figure out whether it was a cat's eye snail or a crab.

But when we're walking along the beach, we can often find things that are harder to identify.

Have some fun and turn this into a treasure hunt for your kids. Once they've found some treasures, see what you can identify together. Look for clues around you, what birds are on the beach? are there any whole shells that look a bit like the piece you've found?

Take a photo of your treasures to take home with you, so you can look them up in nature guides like At the Beach.

Can you work out what the treasures in these pictures are?
